The History of Golf for the Disabled
1998
EDGA (European Disabled Golf Association) was established
Founded to promote disability golf and organize tournaments across Europe. EDGA later becomes a key driver in the global development of disability golf, including the management of the World Ranking system.
2014
WR4GD (World Ranking for Golfers with Disability) is launched
Established by The R&A and EDGA, the global ranking system gives players with disabilities a standardized and official platform to compete internationally.
2016〜
Infrastructure and opportunities begin expanding worldwide

WR4GD-sanctioned tournaments are launched across the U.S., Australia, South Africa, and other countries.

2018
International standardization of disability classification begins
To ensure fair competition, a globally recognized classification system is developed, grouping players by disability type and severity (e.g., visual impairment, limb loss, neurological conditions). These classifications are applied in WR4GD-sanctioned events.
2021
USGA hosts the inaugural U.S. Adaptive Open (the world's first disabed golf major)
Held at Pinehurst, North Carolina, this landmark event features players with various disabilities. Winners are crowned in multiple classification categories, attracting international attention.
2023
The R&A hosts the G4D Open (Europe’s first disability golf major)
Held at Woburn Golf Club in England, the event brings together the top-ranked WR4GD players. It showcases elite-level competition and professionalism in disability golf across Europe.
2023
Japan hosts its first WR4GD-sanctioned tournament: Glico ParaGolf Championship
Organized by the Japan Disabled Golf Association (JGDA), this historic event becomes the first WR4GD tournament held in Asia, marking a milestone in disability golf development across the region.
